On the bookshelf in February

I wasn’t able to do quite as much reading as I usually do over spring break becausse I was a little bit distracted… ;)

Piper, welcome to book club!!

The first book I read was This Close to Okay by Leesa Cross-Smith. Y’all I read this book in THREE DAYS! That’s how hooked I was!!! The main character, Tallie, is a therapist. Yep, that’s it. That’s what sold me lol the way Tallie thinks / operates flows effortlessly in my brain because she thinks the same as I do!
Trigger warning: this book discusses suicide.
Tallie is driving home through the rain when she spots a man who is getting ready to jump off a bridge. She does what any person * should * do — she jumps out of her car, engages with the man & convinces him not to jump. The rest of the book follows Tallie & the bridge man. I’m not going to say anything else because there were lots of little secrets throughout this book that I really enjoyed discovering. I gave this book ___ out of five stars.

The second book I read was We Were the Lucky Ones by Georgia Hunter. This book followed a large Jewish family’s experience during World War II. It was different than the other books I’ve read about the Holocaust because it wasn’t necessarily from the perspective of someone in a concentration camp, however, it was a story of survival nonetheless. I was a bit overwhelmed by all of the characters & shifting perspectives & with it being a pretty long book, I kind of struggled to keep track of it all. I understand why it had to be written this way because they were all split up, but I always struggle when books have a bajillion characters lol anyway, I gave this book three out of five stars.

The third book I read was Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty. This book is about a pretty bougee town & of course all of its drama. We know that there is a murder that takes place on Trivia Night at the school, but we don’t have any more information than that. The book follows a bunch of characters during the months prior to the murder & kind of makes you speculate who it is & why. I gave this book four out of five stars simply because the ending was so unexpected & I’m a sucker for a good plot twist!
Trigger warning: this book discusses domestic violence.

Have you ever read the whole Bible? I’ve always wanted to & I’ve tried a few times but it’s hard. It’s just so hard to understand! I had heard several people talk about the Bible Recap: A One-Year Guide to Reading & Understanding the Entire Bible & wanted to give it a try. Tara-Leigh Cobble walks you through reading the Bible chronologically in one year & she has a podcast that goes along with it. While that all sounds great, I knew that truly reading it every single day was not attainable for me. Yes, I feel guilty saying that. After all, He has done for me, I should be able to spend that much time each day reading His word. However, I know myself & I know I wouldn’t & I also know that getting behind would stress me out & then I’d want to give up completely. Then she wrote a book & I knew this was the answer! I just read it when I can! I try to make it a priority but if it doesn’t happen that day, it’s okay. It’s not the end of the world. Her summary of what you read is absolutely amazing. I cannot believe how much I’ve learned already!! It’s designed to be read in a year, however if it takes me two, that’s okay! Because reading the entire Bible in two years is better than not at all. If I’m honest, I’ll probably start over once I finish because it’s that good & I’m sure I’ll learn something new each time, because He’s where the joy is!
