monday morning mindfulness: be a hype girl

I am so thankful for this online community & I want to be a little more intentional about chatting about things, encouraging one another, & reminding each other that many of us are probably feeling similar things, or have at different times. These monday morning mindfulness posts are going to be little glimpses into my heart & life: the good, the bad & the ugly. So much can be learned from different experiences, especially when you are practicing mindfulness.

With all of that being said, today’s topic is: be a hype girl.

I’ve always been pretty care-free when it comes to my hair. I’ve had just about every color & style possible. I recently got my hair done & asked for a style that was pretty out of my comfort zone: I got bangs. I cut my own bangs back in high school & remembered liking them, so I thought it would be a good idea. Little did I know just how differently I’d feel about them now! Apparently I don’t really like things touching my forehead? & also I’m pretty OCD & want them styled perfectly (which seems to be impossible in case you were wondering).

For two weeks I’ve kept my bangs up using different twisting techniques or braids. I got tired of doing those styles, so I decided to try styling the bangs again. I wasn’t 100% pleased with how they looked, but I was already running late & needed to get out the door. I thought to myself… to heck with it! Who cares what middle schoolers think of my hair!

Y’all. I think I got ten compliments before I even got in the front doors! & they just continued to flow in throughout the day (& not just from girls, btw). One of the reasons I absolutely love middle schoolers is because they are unapologetically themselves. This also applies to their conversations — they can either be super kind or super sassy, & you never know what you’re gonna get lol. These kind words from students made me feel like a hair rockstar, especially since my bangs were something I was feeling insecure about. They were totally being my hype girls & boys!

Getting all of these compliments got me thinking…

Why don’t we all act like hype girls for one another? Compliment someone’s cute glasses or clothes. Tell someone you love their lip color or purse. Or even that they have a great smile & their laugh brings you joy!

On an even deeper note, why don’t we all act like hype girls to ourselves?

Why don’t we unapologetically share what we like about others as well as ourselves? With the knowledge of how good all of those sweet compliments made me feel, I think I’ll be taking a note from my middle schoolers to apply to my life from now on:

be a hype girl.

Therefore encourage one another & build each other up.
